The Humanitarium, in partnership with the Central Kentucky Council on Peace & Justice and the Lexington Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission, is beginning the process of making Lexington, Kentucky a “Human Rights City”.

In accordance with Eleanor Roosevelt’s and the United Nations 1948 Declaration of Human Rights (see http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/), a number of American cities have so far become “Human rights Cities”: Washington DC, Chapel Hill/Carroboro, NC, Eugene, OR, Pittsburgh, PA, and, at least ceremonially. Boston, MA.

The Humanitarium is proud to announce its new partnership with Lexington artist, Marjorie Guyon. Beginning in the fall of 2010 we initiated two new projects, “Small Blessings” and “Nation of Nations”

“Small Blessings“ is an outgrowth of the Illumina Project. This project entails the placement of individually selected reporduced images from Illumina into facilities for under served populations – homeless shelters, clothing distribution facilities, rehabilitation and recovery centers, and safe-houses for abused women and children.

“Nation of Nations“ is a series of 10 multimedia works on panel. This new series inspires remembrance and resilience by reframing and reclaiming the America and the principles of equality, justice, and freedom for all. In the words of Walt Whitman “Here is not merely a Nation but a teeming nation of nations.” This project is a visual snapshot of our nation – a reminder that we are all Americans. The Humanitarium’s mission, to understand and celebrate human diversity, will be furthered through the medium of art; these panels will act as catalyst to stimulate thought, discussion and reevaluation of what it means to be an American. Our hope is to bring this to all educational levels.
